Is 3D Gaussian Splatting Beating NeRF on Everything?

3DGS is winning the practical battle, but NeRF still matters in a few places that are easy to overlook.

3DGS is one of the hottest 3D technologies in Silicon Valley right now. It is showing up across startups building world models, and it is also drawing serious ecosystem support from companies like NVIDIA and Meta. Standards bodies are moving too: in February 2026, Khronos—the industry consortium behind OpenGL, Vulkan, and glTF—announced a release candidate for KHR_gaussian_splatting, a glTF extension for storing Gaussian splats.

That last part matters more than it sounds. When Khronos moves, it usually signals that a technology is maturing from “cool research” into something developers can reliably build on.

I’m often asked this question in interviews:
How do 3DGS and NeRF compare in practice—where does each one win or fall short??

The simplistic answer is:
“3DGS is better than NeRF everywhere.”

The better answer is:
3DGS wins on the things most engineers care about first, but NeRF still matters in a few important places.

Why 3DGS took over the conversation

The rise of 3DGS is not mysterious. The original 3DGS paper was a big deal because it showed high-quality real-time novel-view synthesis at 1080p using an explicit set of anisotropic 3D Gaussians plus a fast visibility-aware splatting renderer.

That combination is why 3DGS feels like the default winner today.

Where 3DGS clearly beats NeRF

The biggest 3DGS win is not philosophical. It is operational.

1) Rendering speed

This is the easiest point in the whole debate. 3DGS was explicitly designed for real-time rendering. The original paper framed this as a core objective and demonstrated real-time 1080p rendering with an explicit splatting pipeline.

By contrast, classic NeRF is much slower because rendering requires dense ray sampling and repeated field queries.

2) Training speed

Classic per-scene NeRF made people accept multi-hour training as normal. Instant-NGP changed that story a lot, but even then, 3DGS remains one of the most attractive fast paths to usable scene rendering in practice.

Instant-NGP itself is evidence that NeRF had to reinvent its stack to compete on speed.

3) Explicitness is often a feature, not a limitation

This is one place where I would not give NeRF the edge.

A lot of people say NeRF is superior because it learns a continuous function. That sounds elegant, but in actual pipelines, 3DGS often wins because it is explicit:

So I would not argue that “NeRF learns a function, not just a structure” is an automatic advantage. In many practical contexts, explicit beats elegant.

4) Industry momentum

3DGS is no longer just a paper trend. Reuters reported in February 2026 that World Labs raised $1 billion to push spatial intelligence, with backing that included NVIDIA, AMD, and Autodesk.

At the platform level, NVIDIA’s neural rendering stack supports both NeRFs and 3D Gaussian splats, while Meta’s Spatial SDK documents direct support for Gaussian splats as well. That does not mean NeRF is dead; it means 3DGS has become a first-class production format.

So where does NeRF still have a real advantage?

This is where the conversation needs more discipline.

1) Memory and compactness

This is one of NeRF’s most defensible advantages: it can represent a scene far more compactly than a large, explicit set of optimized Gaussians.

That matters when storage, model size, or deployment on constrained hardware becomes a bottleneck. This is also why compression for 3DGS has become such an active subfield.

2) Cross-scene learning and meta-learning

This is the NeRF argument that still matters the most.

NeRF is a neural representation, so it naturally supports training across many scenes and learning priors that transfer. PixelNeRF is the classic example: instead of optimizing a fresh field per scene, it learns a scene prior and predicts a radiance field from one or a few input images.

That is a different superpower from “fit one scene well.”

If your problem is:

then NeRF-style methods still have a cleaner story.

Once you move from “optimize one scene” to “learn across many scenes,” NeRF-style methods become much more compelling.

3) Quality is closer than people think

It is also worth noting that NeRF-style methods have not fallen behind on raw quality. Strong variants like Zip-NeRF are still considered state-of-the-art in image quality on standard benchmarks. While 3DGS often matches this in practice, it can slightly underperform in some regimes where neural fields remain more stable.

The right interview answer

If someone asks,
“Is 3DGS better than NeRF?”

a better answer is:

3DGS is better for fast reconstruction, real-time rendering, explicit control, and deployment. NeRF is still attractive when compactness matters and when you want to learn across many scenes using priors, meta-learning, or few-shot adaptation.

That is much stronger than saying one dominates the other in every dimension.

So no, 3DGS is not beating NeRF on all points.

It is beating NeRF on the points that are easiest to demo.
